Diesel Progress International, globally renowned publication in the engine-powered equipment markets for over 80 years, has interviewed our VP & General Manager Riccardo Carra on the occasion of Turolla’s 70th Anniversary to speak with him about our exciting journey that combines long-standing tradition and relentless innovation.
The interview was featured on Diesel Progress International October 2018 issue, already available online and soon-to-be distributed in print.
Among other things, Mr. Carra addressed a few key steps of Turolla’s journey, from its origin to the entrance in the Danfoss Group, to the more recent 70th anniversary celebration.
The interview also digged into current and future product development, the innovative efforts of Turolla and Danfoss, and Carra’s forecast of market trends.
Below are some extracts from the interview, which can be read in full here.
Restoring the Turolla brand a few years ago has been an important accomplishment. What has prompted this decision by Danfoss, and what has been the impact on your organization?
“About eight years ago we were allowed to re-brand our organization under its original name, Turolla. This element was beneficial to improve, even more, the team spirit and willingness to be recognised as a successful organization. It has been an important value for Turolla employees to recognize that our roots are deep and strong.”
“Over the last few years Turolla has been through a big transformation […]. We have changed our business model, our footprint, and have started the journey to provide our customers with more innovative and value-added products. The transformation has been successful, and we believe that now we have a very solid background on which to build a solid growth plan. Our operational performances (safety, quality, delivery and efficiency) are good, and our Continuous Improvement Mindset is the right approach […]. The short lead time we offer to our customers, together with high reliability in delivery allows them to optimize their supply chain.”
What have been the most recent developments in terms of products and technology?
“[…] the shhark® quiet pump, which is based on a technology patented by Turolla, that allows levels of operating noise significantly lower than traditional technologies. We spend a lot of effort to develop this new product and the technology to manufacture it, using advanced simulation and modelling techniques.”
Where is product development leading? What are, in your opinion, the most important future trends that Turolla will have to meet?
“Combining the best properties of traditional hydraulics and electric intelligence; we have developed new integrated solutions like ezePower™ and ezeFlow™ to offer significant benefits to our customers and support the Danfoss Electrification Initiative. ezePower™ is one of the results of the “Man on the Moon” Challenge, a fantastic initiative that Danfoss has in place to foster innovation, encouraging employees to come forward with new ideas. […]
How is the market outlook? Is there any new application or geographic market that looks especially appealing for your company?
“Over the last two years our market has finally started to grow again, and hopefully all mega trends are pointing in the right direction related to the applications we serve. There are some new applications triggered by vehicle electrification, like flow-on-demand, that start to be appealing for us.”
General Manager R. Carra concluded the interview with a wish to “accelerate the investments in the Digital Transformation” and a promise to “commit on behalf of the entire Turolla team that we’ll keep going through the journey that we started with commitment, engagement and enthusiasm, to serve our customers as they deserve.”
